Slave Health

Slave Health
Examination
When a slave is acquired, she is examined to determine health and physical state. This examination is thorough and a report is given to the owner.
Medication
Once it is determined what a slave might need in the way of medications, they are administered. If the slave has not been treated with stabilization serum, it is given, unless the slave is the offspring of many generations of serum use. If there are any conditions that come to the healer’s attention, medicines are given to treat those conditions. Slave wine is also given as a matter of course.
Keep girls can be treated with slave wine by the first girl or a healer. Fayeen Keep practices treatment of slave wine on a four-hand basis. All medicines given are reported.
Physical State
Included in the report to the owner is what physical state the slave is in. Most often, the owner already knows it by asking the previous owner or slave or examining that one.
It is the responsibility of the owner to keep a slave groomed.
Branding
A medical kit is kept at the branding rack to treat a branded slave. When the slave is freed from the rack, soothe the burned flesh with a numbing salve, one that relieves pain. On the next day, apply more salve. The redness should be gone by then.
Piercing
An owner may choose to pierce a slave. Provide a basin of salty water. Clean the piercing with the water and a cloth. Apply a small amount of healing salve. Do not remove or scratch away scabbing; it is a natural part of healing and protects the piercing against infection.

Drugs / Herbal Remedies

Drugs/Herbal Remedies
Antibiotic Serum:
This further enhances healing speed. It costs 1 silver per vial. This is used mostly in cities.
Antitoxin:
This is an antibody capable of destroying microorganisms including viruses and bacteria. Though most disease has disappeared on Gor, there are still bacteria and viruses that may cause infection or illness. They are usually given by injection and most often available in cities. Some say that dar-kosis is curable and that the Initiates know it and withhold it as a form of population control.
Antivenin:
Though it does not mention their existence, Gorean medicine is advanced enough to create them. Antivenins are counteragents to animal poisons, such as Cosian wingfish and the ost.
Breeding Wine:
A sweet liquid given to slaves to make them fertile again. It counteracts slave wine. The active ingredient in this medicine is teslik. Also known as second wine.
Capture Scent:
An anesthetic, similar to chloroform, widely employed to render its victims unconscious. It is inhaled or injected by dart.
Coagulant Serum:
This enhances the coagulating function of the body. It costs 1 silver per vial. Used mostly in cities.
Emetics:
Usually in powder form, it is mixed with water or other drink. Its effects cause diarrhea or vomiting, depending on the dosage. This is used to control slaves. Also known as laxatives.
Frobicain:
A sedative injection. It was often used during Voyages of Acquisition to render a captured barbarian unconscious.
Gieron:
A drug, an allergen, which causes a yellowing of the whites of the eyes. In combination with sajel, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague. It is not infectious.
Healing Salve:
Ointment used to promote healing that is quickly absorbed. The salves made by the Priest-Kings are the most effective, then that made by the Caste of Physicians next. Herbal healing salves may have varying potencies depending on how they are made.
Laxatives:
Use of medications to control the stomach and bowels of slaves. Also known as emetics.
Sajel:
A drug that causes harmless pustules to erupt on the body. In combination with gieron, it reproduces the symptoms of the Bazi plague. It is a non-infectious condition. See Gieron.
Second Wine:
A sweet liquid given to slaves to make them fertile again. It counteracts slave wine. The active ingredient in this formula is teslik.
Slave Wine:
A black and bitter liquid given to slaves for birth control. There are different opinions as to the time that this medicine is effective. For us, it is given on a four-hand (monthly) cycle.
Sleeping Powder:
An amber powder that turns dark blue when it is mixed and shaken with water. There is no other mention of this, so it is not clear whether it is a drug or herbal.
Sleeping Serum:
This is used in surgery instead of kanda. It is used mostly in the cities. The cost per vial is 2 silver.
Stabilization Serum:
A serum that retards aging and maintains health in the human body. It is given in four injections in the area of the small of the back and hip, one injection for four days. There are two formulas of this serum: the original was created by the Priest-Kings for use in their humans. The second was developed by the Caste of Physicians after many centuries of research. The Priest-King formula is highly effective. That of the Caste of Physicians has varying degrees of effect.
Tassa Powder:
A reddish powder that renders a person unconscious. It is mixed with kalana. There is no other mention of this powder and so it is not known if it is a drug or herbal.
Tranquilizers:
The Caste of Physicians have developed several formulas of tranquilizer but they are not specified. They are known to be quick acting and of long duration. Also known as a sedative.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Antiseptic Ointment: A remedy in a base of fat that is smoothed onto a condition, such as a wound or rash. There are a number of blends that can be used, such as peppermint/white sage.
Arro as a tea, it is useful for fever. It is also used as a tincture. The aerial parts of the plant are used.Bergament: Used as a salve, it is good for itching and rashes.Black Pepper: Sprinkled on in powder form, it is used to stop external bleeding. Can be used in a tea to treat internal bleeding. It is very painful when used externally. Also known as stinging spice.Blue Short Grass: This plant grows under the water of waterfalls. When dried and crushed into powder it has numbing qualities and reduces pain. Works well as a salve or ointment.Brak Bush: A shrub whose leaves have a purgatory (laxative) effect when chewed. In higher doses it can induce vomiting. It may also be used as a powder.Breeding Wine: A sweet liquid given to slave girls to make them fertile again. It counteracts slave wine, the active ingredient being teslik. Also known as second wine.Calendula: As a salve it is an antibiotic. It can also be used as a tea. Also known as marigold.Cayenne Pepper: This herb levels out blood pressure. When made as a tea, it helps to stop internal bleeding. When applied as a paste, it stops external bleeding. Also known as stinging spice.Chamomile: As a tea, it aids with sleep especially during pregnancy. The dried flower is used in a tea for stomach upset and pain. Emetics: This can be used in herbal or drug forms as a laxative or to induce vomiting.Green Herbal Powder: There is no detail as to what the ingredients of this powder is. It may vary according to what is available, since it is obviously an herbal medicine. This is a strong antiseptic and antibiotic. As a powder, it can be sprinkled directly onto a wound or mixed with water to cleanse. It can also be used as a tea. Healing Salve: A salve or ointment used to promote fast healing. It is quickly absorbed. There is mention in the Scrolls of different kinds of healing salve with different effective rates. The healing salve of the Caste of Physicians may be more effective than that of outlying settlements and camps. The healing salve of the Priest-Kings is the most effective being very quickly absorbed and very fast to heal with no scarring.Honey: Applied to a wound, it helps promote healing. On burns, it takes away pain, promotes healing, and minimizes scarring. In a tea, it works to fight congestion, settle upset stomach, and decreases pain.Kur Fat: This fat is prized for its antibiotic properties. Often desired for the making of salves and ointments and is also used as a treatment for the skin of newborn infants.Lavenia: The flowers are used as a tea to treat pain.Laxatives: There are herbal and drug forms of this. They are used to control the stomach and bowels of slaves. Vomiting may also be induced with this as a treatment for poisoning.Lyptus: The leaves are used in a tea. It can also be made into a tincture. For relief of congestion or soothing of breathing passages, the oil can be used with boiling water and breathed.Matchweed: This herb works as an anti-coagulant, keeping the blood from clotting or thinning it out when too thick.Mud Packs: Placed about a sprained ankle or other area, it helps to decrease swelling and pain.Natal Cream: A salve that contains glycerin for softening newborn skin, chamomile and lavender for calming and soothing, green herbal powder for cleansing, and bergament for rash prevention.Numbing Salve: Any salve or ointment that contains ingredients that give a numbing effect. Blue short grass is one.Paga: When further distilled, it is used as a strong cleanser. It can be applied alone for quick cleansing. It is a strong antiseptic. Often called sterile paga.Peppermint: As an oil, it can be used as a local anesthetic for small scrapes and burns. In a tea with zingiber (ginger), it fights off infections and settles nausea.Sip Root: A bitter root whose extract is the active ingredient in slave wine. Red Savages make their slaves chew it as a means of birth control.Slave Wine: A liquid that is bitter and black and given to slaves for birth control. The effects are immediate and last until counteracted with breeding wine.Sleeping Powder: An amber powder that turns blue when mixed with water. It is a strong sleep inducer (There is no description that says it is herbal, but it is included here anyway).Sunflower: The leaves are burned in copper burners. It helps with a cold and congestion. The seeds are smoked in a pipe for the same effect.Tassa Powder: A reddish powder that is mixed with kalana. It renders a person unconscious (There is no description to say that this is an herbal, so it is included here).Teslik: This is a plant whose extract is the active ingredient in breeding wine.Thyme: The leaves and flowering tops are used either as a tea or a tincture. It works as an astringent or cleanser.Tubers: These grow in waterfalls and are used make poultices to stop external bleeding. They are dried, crushed and mixed with water.Valerian: This is used as a very strong pain reliever. It can be used as a tea or tincture. It can be used as a sedative and antispasmodic when infused as a tea. In a powder, it can be used for causing sleep. Be careful of dosage. In higher dosages, it can be poisonous.White Sage: As a tea or salve, this is good in fighting infection. The leaves can be used as a poultice to draw out infection.Yellow Powder: This is the powder form of the brak brush. It is concentrated in this form and used as a laxative. It will cause diarrhea in strong doses.Zingiber: This is used in tea to lessen nausea and stomach upset. Also known as ginger.

Diseases / Poisons

Diseases
The stabilization serums have virtually wiped out disease on Gor. With the exception of those listed here, the only other consideration is infection. Even with the aid of the serums, one can die from infection.
Bazi Plague
Originated from Port Bazi, it is transmitted through bites of lice. Some were found immune to it but lethal to others. Those who survive transmit this immunity to their offspring. Slaves who were infected with the disease were often killed. This port was closed by the merchants for two years. It is how the pox was prevented in spreading to other cities, eventually ending. An infected person is described to have dry lips, yellow eyes, and on the skin are broken open, erupted, black, blister-like scattering of pustules. There is no known cure. Also known as the Pox.
Dar-KosisThe literal translation of Dar-Kosis is "the Holy Disease" or equivalent "the Sacred Affliction," a disease similar to Earth leprosy. The disease is named so because it is regarded as being holy to the Priest-Kings. Those who suffer from it are regarded as consecrated to the Priest-Kings. It is regarded as heresy to shed their blood. On the other hand, the Afflicted, as they are called, have little to fear from their fellow men. Their disease is so highly contagious, so devastating in its effects, and so feared on the planet, that even the boldest of outlaws gives them a wide berth.
The Afflicted enjoy a large amount of freedom of movement on Gor. They wander the countryside in shroudlike yellow rags beating a wooden clapping device to warn men from their path. They are warned to stay away from the habitations of men, and, if they approach too closely, they are sometimes stoned. Oddly enough, stoning the Afflicted is not regarded as a violation of the Priest-Kings' injunction against shedding their blood. As an act of charity, Initiates have arranged at various places Dar-Kosis pits where the Afflicted may voluntarily imprison themselves to be fed with food hurled downward from the backs of passing tarns. Once in a Dar-Kosis pit, the Afflicted are not allowed to leave. Those who contract it are regarded by law as dead. The Caste of Physicians worked on a cure and were set back by the Caste of Initiates hiring men to destroy their work. This suggests that the Initiates, representing the Priest-Kings, do not desire a cure to be developed, perhaps using the disease as a control method. The Caste of Physicians has determinedly resumed their work on it. Poisons
Since most poison on Gor is fast acting, according to the Scrolls, there is little chance to treat it in a timely manner. It is usually a death sentence, as in the case of an ost bite. For those poisons that are not immediately deadly, there are antivenins or antitoxins available. Gorean medicine is advanced enough to produce them, even though it may not have been mentioned. However, man-made poisons may have become stronger to counteract the resistance to it, since a formula could be adjusted to produce a stronger solution.
Poison is considered against the codes of the warriors and unworthy of men. It is usually regarded as a woman's weapon. Animals and Plants
Cosian Wingfish: This small, delicate fish has three or four slender spines in its dorsal fin that are poisonous.
Kanda: The root of the plant, dried and ground, makes a deadly poison. The leaves of the plant may be chewed for a narcotic effect. The poison can be made into a paste that melts by body heat. This paste can be applied to weapons, such as knives and arrows, for a deadly effect. Likewise, the past can be applied to the pins of locks. Barrels of kanda are used to poison an area's water supply.
Marsh Moccasin: A snake about five feet long, having a small, triangular head. It often glides along the surface of the water in swamps and marshes. It is an uncommon animal. Slower in effect than the ost, it is still quite poisonous.
Ost: The banded ost is a variety of ost, yellowish orange and is marked with black rings. It is exceedingly poisonous.
Rennel: These are poisonous, crablike desert insects. They tend to gather and move in swarms.
Seaweed, Waters near Schendi: Many fish in these tropical waters are poisonous to eat, a function of certain forms of seaweed on which they feed. The seaweed is harmless to the fish but it contains substances toxic to humans.
Sullius Maximus' Poison: Sullius Maximus was knowledgable in poisons. One particular use mentioned was paralyzing a man who was an enemy. The unfortunate was paralyzed from the neck down. There is an antidote.
Tropical Fish, Waters near Schendi: They are toxic by reason of the seaweed on which they feed.
Uses of Poisons
Fang Ring: The name comes from the fact that it is worn like a normal ring, but there is a place to press which causes a "fang" to raise up. The venom or poison is stored inside the ring, the fang is just like a snake's fang, hollow and when it punctures the skin, the poison is delivered through it.
Free Women: Drugs and poison are often the tools of a Free Woman, since most are not trained in other ways to defend herself. A Free Woman may carry a poisoned knife or needle concealed in her clothes. She may also use poisoned pins to style her hair. Such weapons can also be concealed in a room or area known only to the woman.
Poison Girls: A person can be slain by the bite of a chemically prepared slave. It is also possible to breed a girl with poisonous saliva.
Poisoned Drinks: Poison, such as kanda or ost is added to a drink.
Poisoned Teeth: Artificial teeth placed in the mouth, such as upper canine teeth. Poison is delivered when the teeth are used in a bite. Merchants may use this most often, since they do not learn skill in arms.
Suicide Pellets: Special pellets formulated to kill. They are taken when a person does not wish to give up information that may be tortured from him.
Water Sources: Poison may be added to a place's water supply to spoil it and cause death and confusion.

Medical

Medical
As a whole, Goreans are rarely sick. They have had many generations with the benefits of advanced medicine. This includes the stabilization serum that creates efficient health and prolongs life. It is quite possible to have people still alive that are several hundred years old.Because the Priest-Kings keep Gor at a static level of development in areas like technology, Goreans still die. There are creatures that have poisonous spines, bites or claws and plants that produce strong poisons. There are still bacteria and viruses that may cause infection or illness. There are always injuries gained from combat or accident that may cause loss of life.
Medical Treatment
Treatment is the most advanced in the cities of Gor. Settlements and towns may have good treatment, too, but may not have the most advanced treatments. This is either location or money dependent, or both. The cost of advanced health can be expensive. Camps and villages will have medical treatment of the most primitive kind, since they do not have the financial level that cities and towns have, or are not in a place where the supplies and equipment can be purchased. However, there are caravans and traveling merchants that may supply the need for a price, and the physicians or healers of those places may have been city or town trained. It is within the bounds of possibility that Fayeen Keep would have good medical treatment.
Recovery Times
Treatment of injuries is made easier with the general population being so healthy. Bodies mend far more quickly, even with severe injuries, such as the loss of a limb. The recovery times we use allow for at least one check on the progress before the injury is completely healed:
Bones, Broken, Large5 days (dense tissue damage)
Bones, Broken, Small1 - 2 days (dense tissue damage)
Bruises 1 day
Burns, Light1 - 2 days
Burns, Deep3 - 4 days
Childbirth1 - 2 days, depending on the ease of birth
DiseaseDepends on the illness or infection, numbered in days.
Limb, Severed7 days (severe tissue trauma and shock)
Poison1 day for ingested, 2 - 3 days for animal (usually includes a bite, claw or sting strike).
Sprains or Strains1 day for light, 2 days for severe
Wound, Shallow, No Stitches2 days
Wound, Deep, No Stitches3 days

Women's Health Class

by Zenith Sorbet, physician

This week's session is on women's care and as usual it is an informal discussion based type class so you can stop and interrupt me at anytime with questions or comments.

I'm sure you know that many people in SL go through pregnancies and deliveries. Obviously, our avatars representatives can't just go out and get pregnant from sex in the usual way. So for those of you out there busy trying and trying the way Mother Nature designed real humans and getting absolutely nowhere, let me give you a hint. Just as sex requires a lot of roleplay and imagination, and few special attachments, so too, does pregnancy. So I will begin with a few of the common questions I get.

1) Who decides if someone gets pregnant?
Bluntly, only the potential mother can decide. There are simply no accidental pregnancies in SL Gor because pregnancy has to be role played. So your patient makes a decision to get pregnant. It is always nice if they come to see you before hand for a prenatal check up. At that point you can help them by asking a few important questions. Most important of these is likely has the father consented to this. As in real life an unplanned role play pregnancy, sprung on an unsuspecting father can be disasterous for a relationship.

2) How long does pregnancy last?
There is a general standard of six weeks real life time.

This comes from a specific card widely distributed by the various Green Caste group. This card states the following. "On Earth, a normal pregnancy is approximately 40 weeks, give or take a solid month. However, babies can be born healthy much sooner than this, given recent developments in neonatal medicine. Knowing that medicine on Gor is even more advanced than our own, and allowing for the exceptionally good health of the Gorean Free Woman, and the effects of the stabilization serums on prenatal development, in addition to the altered gravity and multiple lunar cycles of Gor, it is estimated that a successful Gorean pregnancy, at full term, might run about the length of a successful premature delivery on Earth. Coincidentally, since there are only 5 days in the Gorean week, or hand, this works out to be about 40 hands gestation time" From Gorean Childbirthing by Jenna Harley.

Many of the By the Book Purists argue that we should really be role playing a pregnancy for nine weeks. I tend to agree but there is a problem with that. Most pregnancy supplies that are available to be purchased work an assumption of six weeks real time role playing. However this is role play. So your patient can role the pregnancy much faster or much longer as they wish. So you could potentially in role play announce you are pregnant, change your shape and deliver a baby in five minutes if you role play it correctly. Or you could be pregnant all the time.

So your patient arrives and wish to be diagnosed as pregnant. I have a pregnancy test I use in role play that is very effective. I will rezz you can both try it. It is made by Hulapop Mahoney. Now touch it.

Pregnancy Test: The results are negative, Student #1 is not pregnant.
Student #1: phew
Pregnancy Test: The results are negative, Student #2 is not pregnant.

You saw how you get a private menu asking you if you want the answer to be positive negative or random. So your patient is now confirmed as pregnant.

3) How do I change my shape?
The cheapest way is to change shape by going to appearance, shape torso belly size. Also as the breasts and hips also enlarge in pregnancy and broaden I recommend adjusting those as well. Many of the freebie stores and Green Caste of Gor and Physician's Caste of Gor have free pregnancy shapes. I have included a set in my supplies box. I find the pregnancy shapes alone are not that good at representing a pregnancy. That package contains a full set of shape changes and landmarks to various stores which sell pregnany supplies. Most recently we have a Gorean specific one. In addition a woman can add a prim belly. The disadvantage to the prim belly is then clothing doesn't fit whereas with the shapes, most clothing will continue to fit, except possibly for prim skirt adjustments. So I warn new mothers of this.

In addition, there are many stores in SL that have supplies for role playing pregnancy. Some can be very expensive and some are very cheap. It pays to shop around. It also pays to compare features. I have included landmarks to some stores I have found. I am not recommending anyone go and purchase these items just that these are places to go look.

4) Should your patient purchase a scripted talking pregnancy?
I will put on the one I have which is the least obnoxious one.  In a word NO! Strongly discourage these. They are expensive, they are annoying, and they interrrupt role play.

Let me give the worst example.
I had a woman who had hers set to talk every couple of minutes and in the middle a raid her belly said "Mommy sits down to eat a cracker because she is hungry." Pregnant bellies don't talk in real life so why should role pay ones? These things can be so obnoxious and annoying some sims including Vonda ban them.

I also get a lot of questions about prim babies. There are free prim babies readily available and many that can be purchased, I will demonstrate with the one I happen to like. The package I've given you also has some free prim babies. There is no need to purchase a prim baby. You can role play everything.

sh2 Birthing Cuddle Baby v1.5: (c)2008 sh2 Creations, All Rights Reserved. Use is governed by our Terms of Service (http://www.sh2creations.com/heavensent/legal/TOS/).

This is heaven sent birthing baby. It is about 600L if I recall correctly. It is naked and I use it in delivery. It's adjustable and you can change hair, skin tone whatever ...and it cries the newborn cry when you touch it. I prefer to have mothers contact me in advance of their delivery so I can set the newborn correctly. I once pulled out my baby and it was black with dark brown skin and the parents were both fair blue eyed blonds and the father got a bit upset. I rp'd the baby looked dark from birthing fluid and changed everything.

They also have a cuddle baby. It has clothes on. I tell the mother we can use my naked baby for birthing and then switch to theirs to save some lindens. The only thing with this one is finding Gorean appropriate clothing. For example this outfit with little airplanes is not Gorean appropriate. It is a very good product. Maybe if enough people ask they will make a Gorean baby

The other thing to warn mothers about is depending on where their clothing is attached they may find that their skirt comes off when they pick up the baby. Most women who rp pregnancy kind of know what to expect, morning sickness, dizzy spells crazy cravings. They have either been pregnant themselves already or a close family friend has. Some don't know and want the whole scoop. So I have to describe to them about what to expect. An easy way to do this is while you are talking to the mother type into your browser common pregnancy symptoms and then you have it all clearly laid out. First month expect this, second month expect that... etc. The pregnancy issue is the really common one. You rarely get other strictly female issues.Gorean women are all very healthy. They have young strong bodies due to the stabilization serum.

There is no mention of them menstruating either so I think the slave wine suppresses menstruation. Free woman have access to a version of so called "slave wine" but it supposedly has no bitter flavor. I have no idea if that is true to the books or not. (Note: it is true) It simply doesn't come up. It makes sense that Free Women would take advantage of the effects of slave wine. So you will not get women coming in with dysmenorhea.

The only other female issue specifically mentioned in the book is frigidity. Do you know the recommended cure? The recommended treatment is to learn to dance like a slave girl. You will get collared for that if you do it public. I tell women You don't do it in public. I also say You probably don't even do it for your Free Companion in case it gets him thinking about collaring you. The recommendation of learning slave dancing is in the books and it supposedly teaches a Free Woman to discover her sexuality and learn how to enjoy sex. In the books women are all really slaves, just some have collars and some don't. Free Woman are referred to as women who haven't yet been collared. And Free Women are only Free because Men wish them to be so.

Now I read a neat analysis about the populations in Gor and the estimate I saw was 60% of women are free. I suspect because Free Women seem to be the ones who do the most nonmenial labor.

So I guess that is all I planned to cover today.

Childbirth

Talk was given by Zenith Sorbet

Two fundamentally different approaches to childbirth.
  • Likely health status of gorean women.
  • By the Books Birthing - best guess
  • Fathers at birthing? Who may attend birthings.
  • Importance of preplanning delivery
  • Birthing positions
  • Cervis versus Vagina
  • Breastfeeding in the books
I will begin by discussing two fundamental philosophical differences in attitude to birthing. On the one hand there are those who see birth as a dangerous journey where many things can go wrong and both mother and child are in terrible danger that must be foreseen and prevented. On the other hand are those that think childbirth is a natural function not a disease and should not even be handled by a physician. I expect that the truth lies somewhere in between. Certainly women and babies can die in delivery. But most of the time women could have their babies alone without help and would be just fine. One can roughly divide the two attitudes about childbirth by the Atlantic ocean. The North American attitude is that childbirth is inherently risky and horrible. This is reflected in North American standard childbirth practices.

Also in the two physicians groups the card I just gave you reflects a North American attitude. Women are put on their backs, their pubic hair is shaved, the entrance to their vagina is cut open in a surgical fashion, episiotomy, it is called. Each of these surgical procedures has a specific reason for being done. For example the shaving of the pubic hair is supposed to prevent infection. The problem is that most of these surgical interventions were adopted in North American without proper studies and many of them are just plain wrong. Shaving pubic hair CAUSES more infections to take place when one examines the studies which have been done in a proper double blind fashion. Delivering in stirrups legs pulled wide apart, pushing up against gravity CAUSES tearing. The best example of stupidity is the routine episiotomy.  If you examine this widely distributed card you will see the reasons given are preventing large tears, keeping the vagina from being overstretched so a woman retains her ability to be sexually pleasing, sparing the babies heads from being battered on the cervix and so forth. Every single one of these rationalizations is dead wrong. I will hand out a card showing cumulative evidence explaining why routine epsiotomies CAUSE the problems it is supposed to prevent.  Here is a collected literature summary of current knowledge of episotomies.

Now there will be times when you do need to cut open the entrance of a woman's vagina such as if a baby is in acute distress and you must get that baby born fast. In such cases episiotomies save lives. Fine but not routinely.

Why do we care in role play? Well first the Jenna Harley birthcard has been widely distributed and is a regarded as standard. So people expect this kind of birth. But Gorean physicians are not earth physicians.

In Gor we value natural materials, clean fresh air, exercise, herbs, in short an entire approach that is natural and evidence based. Also Gorean women, due to the stabilisation shots are all like healthy 25 year olds. And I mean in perfect health. We eat right, we live right, we are eternally young. So Gorean women should also have natural births and easy births. Now there is almost nothing about birthing in the books. John Norman was not interested in birthing. So everything we do we do is terms of best guess. So best guess is natural childbirth, care to modesty of the Free Woman, and being family centered and oriented.

The debate in the Gorean groups is going on now. I will pass out two more cards. The first card is Sage commenting on the Jenna Harley card. The second one if the trasncript of a class where she discusses how she handles births. Sage is a RL midwife. I am not a midwife I am a geneticist, the old fashioned type who stayed with a family through a birth. So I have sat in on over 500 births RL. And a few times things went very fast and I "caught" a baby.

Based on my experience Sage's birthcard is perfectly consistent with natural family centered and oriented childbirth. I also think her approach is consistent with Gorean philosophy on such things. Of course that is only my opinion. I don't intend to get into too much of the details of how to birth as they are well covered in these cards. There is a wealth of excellent information in both Jenna harleys and Sage's cards. I expect you to read those carefully on your own and absorb the knowledge there as background for birthing.

From here I will concentrate on the common questions and errors I get after students have studied those cards. Plus some common role play situations that can be problems and how to handle them.

What is the father's role in the birth? I think Gorean. Gorean men express their emotions, cry, are loving. They are also strong and hard in some ways. They have many of them seen battle and death. I would expect the average Gorean to be entirely practical. I have no idea if they stay, it isn't in the books. So in my opinion, it is up to the mother and what their role play dictates to them is right. If she wants the man there then he has the choice. In my rp I wasn't too fond of my forced companion and our relationship was stormy so I refused to allow him in for the birth of our two sons. He waited outside with his girl and was just as happy to do it. However for Abbi's birth, where we had been together long enough that our story had developed that we were in love now, I invited him and he held me in his arms while I birthed. So I always try to go with the rp of the people involved. Let them decide. Same for slave girls. For some the girl is competition and they get horribly upset if the slave girl is there. So she waits outside. For others the slave girl is family so she stays. You are a guest at their family event so you go with their flow.

In terms of prim babies, I often use my birthing baby, handed to the mother and rp the baby is born, lifting to the mother's chest. However you don't have to have to have a prim baby you can rp the whole thing. And then the mother "wears" the baby, I touch it and it cries.

What do you do if there is a case the woman doesn't want the girl there but the man seems insistant and does not tell the girl to leave? I tell the girl myself to get out. But if the Master overrules you and says, she stays, then you try to smooth things over. I will use my skirts to screen view of her and ignore her. And I just sat there. And the girl eventually went outside.

Now even though we don't have to have prim babies I find that particular one works very well. It's naked. Most prim babies have clothing on. chuckles. So I rp using this baby for the birth, I give it to the mother. I rp the baby being born and lfiting it to her chest. She "wears" it. I touch baby, baby cries, everyone is happy. Then I rp taking the baby giving it an quick check up, and dressing it. The mother then uses her own baby now dressed.  I also try to get the mother to give me time to do some advance notice on the birthing.

I absolutely HATE it when a woman staggers into the infirmary rping heavy labor and I haven't seen her before. This isn't fair. I won't have my birthing baby set to the right hair and eye color and skin tone. A birth can take an hour of RT. If I know in advance I can set aside a block of RL time. I'll show you my birthing baby. I had one situation where I had no warning, both parents were fair blonds, the birthing baby popped out chocloate brown and the father got quite upset. I rp'd the baby was wet and needed to be cleaned up and changed it.

600L and my most used medical device after my stethscope. It is no copy trans so I give it to mother. After it's born you want to have a dressed one anyway.

This one is the cuddle one.[19:07] Zenith Sorbet: So you "birth:" and then rp you have dressed the baby and hand mother her own prim baby. Now let me get the lm. Now the content of the birth itself is covered in those cards. I will now just address a couple of other points.

1) I happen to like the birthing chair.
Simple reason is you can rp delivering the birth from under the woman's skirts and you don't have her naked and exposed while all the family gathers around. I don't know about you, but I prefer NOT to be naked in front of everyone. I also think it is consistent with a culture where the women would want modesty preserved and certainly a Free Woman would. Also it makes good sense in terms of female physiology because it is the best position to birth in.

Some women like to deliver lying on their side as well. In RL I always encouraged a mother to choose the position her body told her. In SL we don't have that issue.

The second point I want to address is a common error.
2) vagina versus cervix
The baby must get through two rings of muscle like tissue to be born.

The entrance at the top of the vagina where the womb/uterus opens is the cervix. The longest hardest part of labor is opening up that part. A woman will not normally feel an urge to push until that part is completely open. It can take hours especially for a first baby. So if they arrive in the infirmary rping heavy labor and you need to go pick up your kids at achool you can tell her her cervix is only half open, she needs more time, and go pick up your kids and come back in later. If she does start pushing too soon then the cervix can get swollen and impede a natural delivery; especially if she is propped up in a ridiculous position or left lying in bed for hours. That part can also get a tear in it as the baby passes but that is not common.

Now once the cervix is completely open the second ring of muscle is the entrance to the vagina. When the baby is one or two pushes away and can be seen stretching that ring a woman commonly feels a strong burning sensation. So I tell women, in IM "complain of burning next push" in rp. And I rp the head being born. Then the baby comes out. Lift it onto Mom's chest and touch it so it cries Everyone is happy. I always rp the arrival of the placenta and inspecting it.

The Only thing mentioned in the books. Gorean babies are breast fed.[19:18] Zenith Sorbet: There are no wetnurses or bottles in the book only breast feeding. So I tell the mother to start breast feeding and I rp cutting the cord, delivering the checking the placenta.

Now for the placenta I only do a brief rp.Check it is intact, check it is normal, check it has three vessels in the cord. I don't advise asking a warrior to cut the cord. They draw their swords and scream and slash. Normal babies have three vessels one artery two veins in the cord. Some have only one and are perfectly normal babies. Two vessels instead of three means baby is probably normal but it is associated with genetic abnormalities.

After the placenta is delivered I will rp quietly cleaning up the mother or having a slave girl do it. Basically at this point the rp birth scene is over. The family wants to move to rp scene and loving welcome to baby so I just rp checking the baby a few more times and then I leave. They really are not interested in details like rep clothes to absorb post birth blood. I move Mom off the birthing table/chair to a comfy bed where the family can gather around. I prefer them to birth in their own home with advance notice so I can take my birthing stool along. If they come into the infirmary, I put them in one of the rest and recovery beds.

Many woman who RL have had very hard deliveries that ended up wth c-sections or disasters will have a normal rp SL birth and end up getting very emotional and cry RL and feel great intense involvement. If I sense that I tell them they need a check up next day just so I can touch bases with them and make sure they are all right. Also some women want much drama, baby nearly dying, developing infections, need lots of attention when normally that doesn't happen.

I try to rp my way out of those situations, but sometimes you just have to give em what they want. "I know it feels like you have a tear but you don't, It's just bruising." "I know it feels like a fever but I have checked and you are perfectly fine. It's just hormonal fluctuations."
