Dances:
There is no standardization or little standardization for the better for the worse in Gorean slave dance. Not only can the dances differ from city to city, and town to town, and even from tavern to tavern, but they are likely to differ, too even from girl to girl. This is because each girl, in her own way, brings the nature of her own body, her own dispositions, her own sensuality and needs, her own personality. to the dance. For the woman, slaves dance is a uniquely personal and creative art form. Too, of course if provides her with a wondrous modality for deeply intimate self-expression. Guardsman of Gor pg 260

Wrists are placed behind her, in the adjustable wrists clamps, each on their vertical flat metal bar, which are screwed shut. Feet are shackled on a rotating metal platform. Fetters (slave bracelets of Torvaldsland): consist of curved, hinged bands of black iron, three quarters of an inch in width and a quarter inch in thickness. On one of each of the two curved pieces consituting a bracelet there is a welded ring; the two welded rings are joined by a single link, about an inch in width, counting both sides, each of which is about a quarter of an inch in diameter, and three inches long. Marauders of Gor pg 46
Four Chains: wrists are joined by about eighteen inches of chain and similarly for the ankles. Further each wrist is chained to the ankle. This arrangement, produces the "four chains." Captive of Gor Page 42
Gag: a device secured in place with by a broad mouth covering strap, with three smaller straps attached to it, one to secure the broad strap at the upper lip, another to secure it across the mouth, pulling it back between the teeth, and one to secure it at the chin. These straps are then pulled back tightly and fastened; the top strap above the ears, behind the back of the head, to the lower straps behind the back of the head. The heavy rolled leather wadding that is thrust back behind the teeth with the broad mouth covering strap, by design, expands thus securing it in place, packing the entire oral orifice. Dancer of Gor pg. 271

Mercenaries of Gor pg 75
Iron Belt: This belt consisted of two major pieces; one was a rounded, fitted, curved bar like waistband, flattened at the ends; one end of this band, that on the right, standing behind the woman and looking forward, had a heavy semicircular ring, or staple, welded onto it; the other flattened end of the waistband, looking forward, had a slot in it which fitted over the staple; the other major portion of this belt consisted of a curved band of flat, shaped iron' one end of this flat band was curved about, and closed about, the bar like waistband in the front; this produces a hinge; the flat, U-shaped strap of the iron swings on this hinge; on the other end of this flat band of the iron is a slot; it fits over the same staple as the slot in the flattened end of the left side of the bar like waistband. The belt is then put in the woman in this fashion. The waistband is closed about her, the left side, its slot penetrated by the staple, over the right side; the flat U-shaped band of iron, contoured to female intimacies, is then swung up on its hinge between her thighs, where the slot on its end is penetrated by the staple, this keeping the part of the belt in place. The whole apparatus is then locked on her, the tongue of a padlock thrust through the staple, the lock then snapped shut.   Kajira of Gor pg 103

Slave Goad: Rather like the tarn goad, except that it is designed to be used as an instrument for the control of human beings rather than tarns….Unlike the tarn goad which has a simple on-off switch in the handle, the slave goad works with both a switch and a dial, and the intensity of the charge administered can be varied from an infliction which is only distinctly unpleasant to one which is instantly lethal. The slave goad, unknown in most Gorean cities, is almost never used except by professional slavers, probably because of the great expense involved.   Assassins of Gor Pg 85
Slave Hobble: Consists of two rings, one for a wrist, the other for ankle, joined by about seven inches of chain. In a right handed girl, it locks on the right wrist and left ankle. Stimulation Cage: an ornately barred, low ceiling cage, about five feet high, rather roomy. The girl in the stimulation cage is not permitted to look into the eyes of a male, not even a male slave. This is designed to make her extremely conscience of males. Accouterments include: brushes, perfumes, cosmetics, slave jewelry, heavy necklaces, armlets, bracelets, and bangles. There is no clothing. There are cushions, bowls of copper, and lamps of brass. There are surfaces of varying textures: deep piled rug, satins, silk, coarsely woven cloths, brocades, rep cloth, a tiled corner, sleen pelt, cloths woven of strung beads, cloaks of leather and mats of reed. The point is to bring the senses to life. Tribesmen of Gor pg. 24

Bondage is a condition in which imagination and inventiveness in a slave are highly appropriate.  Vagabonds of Gor pg 35
Kneeling Distance:
It is customary in the kneeling position to remain back a few feet from the male. The kneeling position, itself, expresses the servitude of the slave, and her submission. The distance serves three major purposes. (1) It symbolizes in the distance, as well as in the differential in height, the social inferiority of the slave to the master. (2) It puts the slave in a position where all of her, for the master's delight, can be seen. A kneeling woman is incredibly beautiful. (3) It also puts enough space between the slave and the free male so that the releasing of his rapacity is then likely to require a decision, and is less likely to be simply, reflexively, triggered. This regarded as being particularly important when the slave is in the presence of a male who is not her master. The kneeling position, thus, interestingly, can occasionally provide a measure of security, if somewhat a tenuous one, for the slave, tending to reduce to some extend the frequency with which, in a culture with such interpersonal proximity’s, she might otherwise be subjected to unauthorized rape. This same tiny measure of protection, of course, puts her in much greater danger from her real master, for he, observing her, seeing her kneeling beautifully before him, can also delay in his considerations as to her suitable exploitation’s.....The main reason a slave kneels, of course, aside from such subtle and complex considerations, is simply that she is a slave, and that the position, accordingly, is appropriate for her.  Dancer of Gor pg 156 - 157
"The Gorean slave girl, incidentally, will space herself from her master quite differently in different situations. For example, if she is somewhat farther away, it is easier for her to display herself in all her beauty; if she wishes to wheedle for his caress she may approach quite closely; if she is receiving instructions she may kneel a few feet away; if she is begging to serve his pleasure she may kneel at his feet, perhaps kissing them. She who fears she is to be disciplined will commonly hang back; sometimes too, a girl will fear to approach too closely until the master, by an expression or small sign, indicates that she is not in obvious disfavor and may do so."    Explorers of Gor pg 201

Bara/Belly    Explorers of Gor pg 77      Mercenaries of Gor pg 19
"Bara," said Mincon to Tula. "Bara," said I to Feiqa. Both slaves went immediately to their bellies, their heads to the left, their wrists crossed behind their backs, their ankles also crossed. It is a common binding position. Mercenaries of Gor pg 145
Blanket     Explorers of Gor pg 94
"I then threw the second blanket, the top blanket over her, covering her completely. When a blanket, or cloak, or covering of any sort, is thrown over a slave like this she may not speak or rise. She must remain as she is, silent, until the master , or some free man, lifts the covering away."

"These things vary, I learned from city to city, and depend, also, on such matters as context and conditions. In a market, in the crowding and jostling for instance, a girl may follow so closely she pressed against the back of his left shoulder. Girls seldom follow behind and on the right. If she is thusly placed it is commonly a sign she is in disfavor. If more than one girl is involved, she who follows most closely on the left is generally taken to be in highest favor; girls compete for this position. In an open area, such a the fields in which we trekked, the girl is placed some five or ten feet behind, and on the left. If he must move suddenly she will not, thusly, constitute an impediment to his action."  Slave Girl of Gor pg 30
High-Harness Position       Mercenaries of Gor pg 308 - 309
"Lift your head, " he said. "Higher. Higher!" She looked up at him, her head far back, the leash on her throat.... "You need not now keep your head in high-harness position,", he said to the girl. She moved her head."
Kneel to the Coffle     Slave Girl of Gor pg 127
"Kneel to be coffled," said one of the men. The girls knelt, closely, one behind the other, there were six wrist rings on the chain he carried. He placed the girl who had been whipped by Lady Sabina first in the coffle line. "Left wrist coffle," he said. They lifted their left wrists, frightened. Interestingly, the man snapping the wrist rings on the girls’ left wrists did not put the first girl in the first ring, but the second. When the four maids were coffled there was, thus, an empty wrist ring both at the head and rear of the line. "Stand, Slaves," said the man. "Lower chain." The girls stood. Then, ordered, the lowered their wrists. They were then in line, standing, coffled."

"Come now, my pretty slaves,' said Ginger, 'kneel straight. Back straight, heads up. Back on your heels there! Spread those pretty knees. Yes, that is the way men like it. Put your hands, palms down, on your thighs. Good. good. Excellent!' The girls now knelt in the coffle as pleasure slaves." Savages of Gor pg 155
Nestle Position   Explorer's of Gor pg 279
"Nestle," I told her. "Yes, Master," she said. She nestled obediently in the crook of my left arm."
Obeisance     Rogue of Gor pg 299
"There are many ways to perform obeisance." I said. "I am a free woman," she said, " I know none of them." "I shall instruct you briefly in three," I said. " First kneel before me , back on your heels, yes, with your knees wide, wider, your hands on your thighs, your back straight, your breasts out, good, your belly in, good, and now lower your head in deference, in submission." "Now that," I said, " may not be exactly a form of obeisance, for authorities do not all agree, but for our purposes we shall count it as one. It is, at any rate, a beautiful position, and it is, certainly, a common position of slave submission."
"Now" I said, " and this is clearly a form of obeisance, bend forward and put your head to the mat, the palms of your hands on the mat. Good. Now lift your head little and come forward, substantially keeping the position. Forward a little more." "But then my face will be at your feet," she said," My lips will be over them!" "Yes," I said, "Good, now, put your head down and lick and kiss my feet." "I am a free Woman!" She Said. "You are a woman," I said," now softly lingeringly, and lovingly, Good." "I am not a slave," she said "All women are slaves, "I said " Imagine what this would be like if you were truly a collared slave." She gasped.
"Now" I said, "for a third form of obeisance. You may belly to me." "I do not understand," she whispered. "There are various forms of bellying, " I said, and bellying may be suitably and pleasingly combined with other forms of floor movements, approaching the Master on all fours, turning to your sides and back, writhing before him, and so on. We will take a very simple variation, suitable for an ignorant free female who has not yet even begun to discover the depths of her sexuality." She looked up at me. "On your belly," I said. She backed off a bit , and went to her belly. her hair was before her face, as she now on her belly before me looked up at me. "Now inch forward," I said, " remaining low on your belly, and when you reach my feet, once again, as before, lifting your head a little, tenderly and humbly, and beautifully, as though you were a slave, lick and kiss them. Good. Good. Now take my foot and place it gently on your head. Very good. Now place it again on the Mat, and kiss it again. Good. You may now belly back a little, humbly. I have not yet given you permission to rise of course." Mercenaries of Gor pg 409 - 410
Prostrate    Kajira of Gor pg 305
"I knelt before the guest, putting the palms of my hands on the floor and my head to the tiles."
Run    Assassins of Gor pg 45
"….I was amused, for she had run as a slave girl is sometimes taught to run, with rapid short steps, her legs almost straight, head turned to the left, arms at her sides, palms out at a forty-five degree angle, more of a dancer’s motion than a true run."
She Sleen/She-Quadruped    Guardsman of Gor pg 225
"In this discipline the female is forbidden human speech. She is also forbidden human posture, in the sense that she is not allowed to rise to her feet. Her locomotion, unless commanded to roll, or put under similar commands, suitable for a pet, will be on all fours. Her food will be thrown to her, or put in pans on the ground. In either case, she must feed without the use of her hands. She may also, of course, be fed by hand, but, again, will not be permitted to touch the food with her hands. She may be taught tricks. Sometimes these are taught as functions of arbitrary sounds, so that she must learn them as any animal might, without the benefit of an earlier understanding of the word used. If she is slow to learn, of course, she is punished, as would be any other animal. When used, too, it will commonly be in the modality of the she-quadrupled. This discipline is often used as a punishment, but it may figure in the training of a new girl. It helps her to understand what she now is, an animal totally subject to her master."   Mercenaries of Gor pg 215 - 216
Slave Lips      Kajira of Gor pg 224
"Similarly, I was not required to respond to certain sorts of commands, for example, to make "slave lips," pursing my lips for kissing, or to writhe slowly before my viewers."
Slave Rape     Explorers of Gor pg 202
"I went to the side of the room and picked up my sea bag. I threw it to the center of the room. She looked down at it puzzled. It was of heavy blue material, canvas, and tied with a white rope. "Lie down upon it," I told her, "on your back, your head to the floor." She did so. "No, please," she said, "not like this." It is a common position for a disciplinary slave rape. In it the woman feels very vulnerable, very helpless. I then took her."
Slavers Caress/Whip Caress      Assassin of Gor pg 294
"Then, before I could realize what he intended, he had subjected Miss Cardwell to what, among slavers, is known as the Whip Caress. Ideally it is done, as Kamchak had, unexpectedly, taking the girl unawares. Elizabeth suddenly cried out throwing her head to one side. I observed to my amazement the sudden, involuntary, uncontrollable response to the touch. The Whip Caress is commonly used among Slavers to force a girl to betray herself."   Nomads of Gor pg 168
Sula        Explorers of Gor pg 77
"Sula, Kajira!' said the man. She slid her legs from under her and lay on her back, her hands at her sides, palms up, legs open."
Tower Slave Position    Priest-Kings of Gor pg 46
"The position of the Tower Slave, in which Vika knelt, differs from that of a free woman only in the position of the wrists which are held before her and, when not occupied, crossed as though for binding...The position of the Pleasure Slave, incidentally, differs from the position of both the free woman and the Tower Slave. The hands of a Pleasure Slave normally rest on her thighs but, in some cities, for example, Thentis, I believe, they are crossed behind her. More significantly, for the free woman's hands may also rest on her thighs, there is a difference in the placement of the knees. In all these kneeling positions, incidentally, even that of the Pleasure Slave, the Gorean woman carries herself well; her back is straight and her chin is high. She tends to be vital and beautiful to look upon."
Turian Knee Walk (mentioned but no description)    Vagabonds of Gor pg 35
Usage Position    Kajira of Gor pg 434
"He knelt me there. "Put your head down, to the floor," he said. "Clasp your hands, firmly, behind the back of your neck." "Yes, Master," I moaned. He was then behind me. He put his hands, under my arms, on my breasts, sweetly and firmly. Then he moved his bands back, caressing my flanks. My head was down. My fingers were together, behind the back of my neck. I was in his collar. It was steel, I could not remove it. I belonged to him. My body hurt, from his whip, that of my master. My head hurt, from my hair, where I had been conducted, unceremoniously, to this location. "Please, Master," I sobbed. "Not like this! Not you, please!" "The slave is pretty," he remarked. "Oh!" I cried. "Oh!" "You have a lovely ass," he said. "Ohhh!" I said. "You may thank me," he said."

Discipline and Punishment

“You cannot punish me!” she cried. “You are not my Masters!”
“Any Free Person can punish an errant slave girl,” I said. “Surely you do not think that her behavior fails to be subject to supervision and correction as soon as she is out of her Master's sight?”
Magician of Gor, page 225

"The discipline of a slave," I said, "may be attended to by any Free Person, otherwise she might do much what she wished, provided only her Master did not learn of it." The legal principle is clear, and has been upheld in several courts, in several cities, including Ar. "
Magicians of Gor, Page 122

"Blood ran from my mouth; other blood I swallowed. My vision cleared; I could not believe the pounding of my heart. I had been cuffed. I knelt, terrified. At that time I did not realize how light had been my discipline considering the gravity of my offense. I had both spoken without permission, and broken position without permission. Most simply, I had been displeasing to a free man."
Slave Girl of Gor, page 34

"In Ar, as on Gor generally, a slave, on threat of torture and impalement, must endure whatever abuse a free person cares to inflict on him."
Assassins of Gor, page 282, 283
"Punishment for having to repeat a command is always at the option of the Master. For example, a command might not be clearly heard, or might not be clear in itself, or might appear inconsistent with the master's presumed intentions. Whether punishment is in order or not is then a matter for judgment on the master's part."
Magicians of Gor, page 198
“Strip,” he said.
“There are others present,” she protested.
His right hand, in a backhand blow, lashed forth, fierce and powerful, striking her from her knees to her side on the tiles. She rose to her hands and knees and, blood at her mouth, regarded him, disbelievingly.
“Must a command be repeated?” he inquired.
Swiftly she tore away the slave tunic, stripping herself."
Guardsmen of Gor, page 257
"Where you ever happy with a master?" I asked acidly.
"Oh yes," said Ute. Her eyes shone.
I looked at her disgustedly. "What happened?" I asked.
She looked down. "I tried to bend him to my will," she said. "He sold me."
Captive of Gor, page 83
"The leash, not uncommonly, can cause a woman to sexually blossom. This is presumably a function of such things as its actual restraint, which is quite real; its message to her that she is an animal, a slave; and its making clear to her, by a device, such as a bracelet, a brand or collar, what is the order of nature, who it is who controls her and who it is whom she must obey, who is the slave and who is the master. A leash, even apart from questions of training, of course, can have powerful emotional impact on a girl. It is a very useful way of convincing a girl that she is slave; similarly it can always serve as an effective reminder. Some girls do not seem to believe they are slaves until they have been leashed. But after that, and after having been put through "leash paces," there is seldom any doubt in their mind. Some girls beg to be leashed, sometimes crawling to their Masters, their leash held between their small, fine teeth. Most Masters use the leash at one time or another. A Gorean saying has it that a leashed slave is a hot slave."
Fighting Slave of Gor, page 366
"Master," said the girl.
"Yes," I said.
"You need not have struck me, earlier this afternoon," she said. "But I suppose that you are the judge of that, for you are the Master," she added, airily.
I looked at her.
"Surely one needs a reason for striking a slave," she said.
"No," I said.
"I see," she said, putting her head down. She trembled.
"Come here," I said. "Kneel before me, back on your heels."
She did so, looking at me. "Master?" she asked.
Suddenly I struck her, a fierce blow which flung her, mouth bloodied, to her side in the dirt.
I stood up. "Do you see?" I asked.
"Yes, Master," she whispered, looking up at me, horrified.
"Now kneel before me and kiss my feet," I said, "and thank me for having struck you."
Tremblingly, she crawled to me, and knelt before me. She put her head down. I felt her lips on my feet. "Thank you for having struck me, Master" she whispered. She looked up at me.
"Do you now understand that you are a slave?" I asked.
"Yes, Master," she said.
"Do you still think that a Master requires a reason to strike you?" I asked.
"No, Master," she said.
"And why is that?" I asked.
"Because I am a slave," she said."
Explorers of Gor, page 295
"Excellent slaves are seldom beaten, for there is little, if any, reason to do so. To be sure, such a girl, particularly a love slave, occasionally desires to feel the stroke of the lash, wanting to feel pain at the hands of a beloved master, wanting to be whipped by him because she loves him, in this way symbolizing to herself her relationship to him, that of slave to Master, her acceptance of that relationship, and her rejoicing in it."
Magicians of Gor, Page 124
“Any Free Man may discipline an insolent or errant slave,” I said, “even one who is the least bit displeasing, even one he might merely feel like disciplining. If she is killed, or injured, he need only pay compensation to her Master, and that only if the Master can be located within a specific amount of time and requests such compensation.” In virtue of such customs and statutes the perfect discipline under which Gorean slaves are kept is maintained and guaranteed even when they are not within the direct purview of their Masters or their appointed agents."
Players of Gor, Page 235

“New slaves are often treated with great harshness. It helps them learn quickly that they are slaves. Later, when the girl is well trained and her services become perfections she may be treated more leniently, even lovingly, like a dog.”
Dancer of Gor, page 90 & 91

"And then, suddenly, she screamed, caught fully, helplessly, in the blurred, whistling slash of the five-stranded Gorean slave whip.
Ten strokes did I give her.
Then she hung weeping, shuddering, at the ring. "How can you whip me?" she asked. "You are a man of Earth." I went to her and, by the hair, jerked back her head, and she cried out with pain. "Is this the touch of a man of Earth?" I asked.
"No," she said, frightened.
"Too," I said, whispering in her ear, "you are a new slave who has been brought recently to my house."
"No," she begged. "No!"
Sometimes a girl is whipped when she is first brought into a new house. It is regarded, in some cities, including Victoria, as a way of making clear to her that the house in which she now finds herself is a house in which she is a slave."
Rogue of Gor, pages 128 - 130

”A master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, it being beneath him. He of course would not approved had one of the girls been maimed, blinded or disfigured.”
Nomads of Gor, page 138
”About her neck was a thick metal collar to which a heavy iron chain had been fastened, the chain itself was attached to a large iron ring placed in the floor. I supposed she was being disciplined.”
Nomads of Gor, page 219

”What do you think should be her punishment?” asked Callimachus of me.
“If she is guilty,” I said, “whatever you wish, as she is a slave.” This was in full accord with Gorean law. Indeed, anything, for whatever reason, or without a reason, may be done to a slave.”
Guardsman of Gor, page 115

”Discipline?” breathed the girl.
“Yes,” said Mira, “the slave girl is subject to discipline and punishment. She is owned, like a sleen or tarsk is owned. She is owned, literally owned. You must understand that in its full sense. Accordingly, anything may be done with her that the master wishes. She may even be slain, if the Master wishes.”
“Then the slave girl is totally helpless,” said the girl. “she is totally at the mercy of the Master.”
“Yes,” said Mira.”
Blood Brothers of Gor, page 296
“Sometimes,” said he, “to discipline a bond-maid, she is hurled naked among the thralls.”
Marauders of Gor, page 89
"We carried a torch to the ice shed. We opened the heavy door, lined with leather, and lifted the torch, closing the door behind us.
In the light of the torch we saw Hilda. We approached more closely.
She lay on her side, in misery, across great blocks of ice; she could lift her head and shoulders no more than six inches from the ice; she could draw her ankles toward her body no more than six inches; small chips of wood, in which the ice is packed, clung about her body; she was bound, hand and foot, her wrists behind her, her ankles crossed and tied. Two ropes prohibited her from struggling to either a sitting or kneeling position, one running from her right ankle across the ice to a ring in the side of the shed, the other running, from her throat across the ice to a similar ring on the other side of the shed.
"Please," she wept.
Her teeth chattered; her lips were blue.
She lay before us, on her back.
"Please," she wept, piteously, "I beg to be permitted to run to the furs of Ivar Forkbeard."
Marauders of Gor, page 132
“Would you have touched her?” asked the Forkbeard.
“Yes, my Jarl,” whispered the young man.
“You see!” cried Ottar. “Let Red Hair strike!”
I smiled. “Let him be whipped instead,” I said.
“No!” cried Ottar.
“Let it be as Red Hair suggests,” said the Forkbeard. He then looked at the thrall. “Run to the whipping post,” he said. “Beg the first free rnan who passes to beat you.”
Yes, my Jarl,” he said.
He would be stripped and bound, wrists over his head, to the post at the bosk shed
“Fifty strokes,” said the Forkbeard.
“Yes, my Jarl,” said the young man
“The lash,” said the Forkbeard, “will be the snake.”
His punishment would be heavy indeed. The snake is a single-bladed whip, weighted, of braided leather, eight feet long and about a half an inch to an inch thick. It is capable of lifting the flesh from a man´s back. Sometimes it is set with tiny particles of metal. It was not impossible that he would die under its blows. The snake is to be distinguished from the much more common Gorean slave whip, with its five broad striking surfaces. The latter whip, commonly used on females, punishes terribly; it has, however, the advantage of not marking the victim. No one is much concerned, of course, with whether or not a thrall is marked . A girl with an unmarked back, commonly, will bring a much higher price than a comparable wench, if her back be muchly scarred. Men commonly relish a smooth female, except for the brand scar."

Assignment 10: Research- discerning what you need to know versus what you can find when needed

This is important and is an assignment that will go on forever as a scribe-slave. Read the books as much as you can. It is not necessary to learn everything that can be asked of you from them. What is important is to know where to look for answers in the books.

One thing you do need to know however is a variety of laws of Gor. The distinction between laws that are of the homestone and those of Merchant law on Gor for example.

Desribe Merchant Law, and state some of those laws it covers. How is Merchant law determined in contrast wth city law? Why is Merchant law important as a bond between cities?

State some laws that are unique to Freewomen and their behavior within society.

What are capture laws? How do they work within the framework of laws regarding FreeWomen and slaves? How do capture laws and rites work in terms of slavers, raiders, and pirates?

List several significant crimes on Gor that are capital offenses.

Find out how severity of crimes differs from place to place on Gor. For example, what is done to a thief in Port Kar versus what is done to punish a convicted thief in Ar?

You are nearly done with your studies to be certified as a scribe-slave or working apprentice to the caste . All that remains after this assignment is :

An ad-hoc oral examination will be given that will meander around all the topics you’ve studied. You may be asked to speak at some length on a process, or topic that has been covered in your studies. You may be asked a “What would you do if?” kind of question. Don’t be nervous. Scribes and scribe-slaves are almost always a breath away from being asked a detailed, opinionated, educated or wild-rask question that needs to be addressed in a scholarly and composed manner. Your demeanor counts as much as your outright knowledge, and your thinking process counts the most of all.
Good luck!

Assignment:

Research What You Need to Know Versus What You Find When Need

BEING UNVIELD IS NOT A CRIME

Veils not required by law, they are a matter of custom and modesty.
The veil, it might be noted, is not legally imperative for a free woman; it is rather a matter of modesty and custom. Some low-class, uncompanioned, free girls do not wear veils. Similarly certain bold free women neglect the veil. Neglect of the veil is not a crime in Gorean cities, though in some it is deemed a brazen and scandalous omission.
Slave Girl

BEWARE OF SNUBBING THE CUSTOM
In many areas it is a socially serious matter for a FW to be unveiled.
May be taken into custody by guardsmen, veiled and forced home.
Repeated offenses usually result in enslavement.
"It must be understood, of course, to fully appreciate what was going on, that the public exposure of the features of a freewoman, particularly one of high caste, or with some pretense to position or status, is a socially serious matter in many Gorean localities. Indeed, in some cities an unveiled free woman is susceptible to being taken into custody by guardsmen, then to be veiled, by force if necessary, and publicly conducted back to her home. Indeed, in some cities she is marched back to her home stripped, except for the face veil which has been put on her. In these cases a crowd usually follows, to see to what home it is that she is to be returned. Repeated offenses in such a city usually result in the enslavement of the female. Such serious measures, of course, are seldom required to protect such familiar Gorean proprieties. Custom, by itself, normally suffices."

WHAT A VIELED FREE WOMAN MAY DO TO AN UNVIELED FREE WOMAN

Other FW scorn an unveiled FW.
May make her kneel, as a slave, before attending her in a market.
Is spoken of as a slave, a slut
An unveiled woman, for example, may find other women turning away from her in a market, perhaps with expressions of disgust. Indeed, she may not even be waited upon, or dealt with, in a market by a free woman unless she first kneels. It would not be unusual for her, in a crowded place, to overhear remarks, perhaps whispers or sneers, of which she is the obvious object, such as "Shameless slut," "brazen baggage," "As immodest as a slave," "I wonder who her master is," and "Put a collar on her!" And if she should attempt to confront or challenge her assailants, she will merely find such remarks repeated articulately and clearly to her face."

"In Ar's Station," he said, "as in Ar, robes of concealment, precisely, are not legally obligatory for free women, no more than the veil. Such things are more a matter of custom. On the other hand, as you know, there are statutes prescribing certain standards of decorum for free women. For example, they may not appear naked in the streets, as may slaves. Indeed, a free woman who appears in public in violation of these standards of decorum, for example, with her arms or legs too much bared, may be made a slave."
Renegades

FREE WOMAN BARING LEGS
Horrified to even think of baring their legs.
Such scandal could ruin a reputation.
In some cities, a woman with bared legs is taken to magistrates and sentenced to slavery.
Contrariwise, almost no free woman would bare her legs. They would not dare to do so. They would be horrified even to think of it. The scandal of such an act could ruin a reputation. It is said on Gor, any woman who bares her legs is a slave. Indeed, in some cities a free woman who might be found with bare legs is taken in hand by magistrates, tried and sentenced to bondage. After the judge’s decision has been enacted, its effect carried out upon her, reducing her to the status of goods, sometimes publicly, that she may be suitably disgraced, sometimes privately, by a contract slaver, that the sensitivities of free women in the city not be offended, she is hooded and transported, stripped and chained, freshly branded and collared, a property female, slave cargo, to a distant market where, once sold, she will begin her life anew, fearfully, as a purchased girl, tremulously as the helpless and lowly slave she now is.
Mercenaries

THIEVES IN GOR
The caste of thieves was important in Port Kar, and even honored. It represented a skill which in the city was held in high repute. Indeed, so jealous of their prerogatives were the caste of thieves that they often hunted thieves who did not belong to their caste, and slew them, throwing their bodies to the urts in the canals. Indeed, there was less thievery in Port Kar than there might have been were there no caste of thieves in the city. They protected, jealously, their own territories from amateur competition. Ear notching and mutiliation, common punishments on Gor for thieves, were not found in Port Kar. The caste was too powerful. On the other hand, it was regarded as permissible to slay a thief or take a female thief slave if the culprit could be apprehended within an Ahn of the theft. After an Ahn the thief, if apprehended and a caste member, was to be remanded to the police of the arsenal. If found guilty in the court of the arsenal, the male thief would be sentenced, for a week to a year, to hard labour in the arsenal or the wharves: the female thief would be sentenced to service, for a week to a year,in a straw -strewn cell in one of Port Kars penal brothels.

PUNISHMENTS

Punishments on Gor

On thieves:
His right ear had been notched,....... Such notching, I knew, is usually done to the ears of thieves; a second offense is normally punished by the loss of the right hand; a third offense is normally punished by the removal of the left hand and both feet. There are few thieves, incidentally, on Gor. I have heard, though there is a Caste of Thieves in Port Kar, a strong caste which naturally protects its members from such indignities as ear notching.
Nomads of GOR, pg 85

A traitor:
It is to bad... I would have preferred to stake him out in the path of the bosk.
Nomads of GOR, pg 321

Harold and I had been fastened in a Turian slave bar, a metal bar with a collar at each end and, behind the collar, manacles which fasten the prisoner's hands behind his neck.
Nomads of GOR, pg. 193

bastinado / foor whiping:
a punishment not otherwise described, however the earth translation is a beating, especially with a stick or cudgel. The beating may be specifically to the soles of the feet.
Book 25: Magicians of Gor, page 445

A master takes no interest in the squabbles of slaves, it being beneath him. He of course would not approved had one of the girls been maimed, blinded or disfigured.
Nomads of Gor, pg 138

pulling her toward a sleen cage mounted low on a cart near the wagon, into which, still braceleted, he thrust her, then closing the door, locking it.
Nomads of GOR, pg 169

You cannot punish me!" she cried.
"You are not my masters!"
"Any free person can punish an errant slave girl," I said.
"Surely you do not think that her behavior fails to be subject to supervision and correction as soon as she is out of her Master's sight?"
Magician of Gor, pg 225

For Running away:
Cut off her feet, and her nose and ears, and blind her in one eye---then release her to live as she can among the wagons.
Nomads of Gor, pg 167

The punishment of a runaway slave is often grievous, sometimes culminating in death.
Nomads of Gor, pg 169

Other Disciplines/Punishments
One poor girl slept naked.....About her neck was a thick metal collar to which a heavy iron chain had been fastened; the chain itself was attached to a large iron ring placed in the floor. I supposed she was being disciplined.
Nomads of Gor, pg 219

"`What do you think should be her punishment ?' asked Callimachus of me. `If she is guilty,' I said, `whatever you wish, as she is a slave.' This was in full accord with Gorean law. Indeed, anything, for whatever reason, or without a reason, may be done to a slave."
Guardsman of Gor, pg 115

"Discipline?" breathed the girl.
"Yes," said Mira, "the slave girl is subject to discipline and punishment. She is owned, like a sleen or tarsk is owned. She is owned, literally owned. You must understand that in its full sense. Accordingly, anything may be done with her that the master wishes. She may even be slain, if the master wishes."
"Then the slave girl is totally helpless," said the girl. "she is totally at the mercy of the master."
"Yes," said Mira.
Blood Brothers of GOR, pg 296

...in this punishment the girl, clothe or unclothed, is bound tightly to an oar, hands behind her, her head down, toward the blade. When the oar lifts from the water she gasps for breath, only in another moment to be submerged again. A recalcitrant girl may be kept on the oar for hours. There is also, however some danger in this, for sea sleen and the white sharks of the north occasionally attempt to tear such a girl from the oar. When food is low, it is not unknown for the men of Torvaldsland to use a bond-maid, if one is available on the ship, for bait in such a manner. The least pleasing girl is always used. This practice, of course encourages bond-maids the vie vigorously to please their masters. An Ahn on the oar is usually more than sufficient to make the coldest and proudest of females an obedient, eager-to-please bond-maid.
Marauders of Gor, pg 66

In this discipline the female is forbidden human speech. It helps her to understand what she now is, an animal totally subject to her master.
