Ko-lars / Collars

Purpose

"What is the common purpose of a collar?""The collar has four common purposes, Master," she said."First, it visibly designates me as a slave, as a brand might not, if it should be covered by clothing. Second it impresses my slavery upon me. Thirdly, it identifies my Master. Fourthly--fourthly--""Fourthly?" he asked."Fourthly?" he asked. "Fourthly," she said, "it makes it easier to leash me."Explorers of Gor, page 80"Ko-lar," she said, indicating her collar. "It is the same word in English," I cried.Slave Girl of Gor, page 80My eyes suddenly noted her one piece of jewelry -- a light, steel like band she wore as a collar.Tarnsman of Gor p26

Beaded
The red savages do not use steel collars. They usually use high, beaded collars, tied together in the front by a rawhide string. Subtle differences in the styles of collars, and in the knots which they are fastened on the girls' necks, differentiate the tribes. Within a given tribe the beading, in its arrangement and colors, identifies the particular master.

Capture
" . . . I looked in the rear-view mirror, terrified. About my throat, closely looped, was a narrow golden chain. It was controlled by two narrow wooden handles, in his hands "It was a girl-capture chain," I said "It is to be distingued from the standard garrote, which is armed with wire and can cut a throat easily. The standard garrote, of course, is impractical for captures, for the victim, in even a reflexive movement, might cut her own throat."
Savages of Gor, page 180

Coffle
The collars had front and back rings, were hinged on the right and locked on the left. This is a familiar form of coffle collar. The lengths of chain between the collars were about three to four feet long. Some were attached to the collar rings by the links themselves, opened and then reclosed about the rings, and some of them were fastened to the collar rings by snap rings. Another common form of coffle collar has its hinge in the front and closes behind the back of the neck, like the common slave collar. It has a single collar ring, usually on the right, through which, usually, a single chain is strung. Girls are spaced on such a chain, usually, by snap rings.
Savages of Gor, page 135

Cord

On some rence islands I have heard, incidentally, that the men have revolted, and enslaved their women. These are usually kept in cord collars, with small disks attached to them, indicating the names of their masters.
Vagabonds of Gor, page 341

Dance

A wrist ring was fastened on her right wrist. The long, slender, gleaming chain was fastened to this and, looping down and up, ascended gracefully to a wide chain ring on her collar, through which it freely passed, thence descending, looping down, and ascending, looping up, gracefully, to the left wrist ring. If she were to stand quietly, the palms of her hands on her thighs, the lower portions of the chain, those two dangling loops, would have been about at the level of her kneels, just a little higher. The higher portion of the chain, of course, would be at the collar loop

Kur

She approached me. From my pouch I drew forth a leather Kur collar, with its lock, and sewn in leather, its large, rounded ring. "What is it?" she asked apprehensively, I took it behind her neck, and then, closing it about her throat, thrust the large, flattish bolt, snapping it, into the locking breech. The two edges of metal, bordered by the leather, fitted closely together. The collar is some three inches in height. The girl must keep her chin up. "It is the collar of a Kur cow," I told her.

Lock

A small, heavy lock on a girl's slave collar, incidently, may be of several varieties, but almost all are cylinder locks, either of the pin or disk variety. In a girl's collar lock there would be either six pins or six disks, on each, it is said, for each letter in the Gorean word for slave, Kajira

Message

"Did you note the collar she wore?" He had not seemed to show much interest in the high thick leather collar that the girl had had sewn about her neck. "Of course" he said. "I myself," I said," have never seen such a collar." "It is a message collar," said Kamback. "Inside the leather sewn within, will be a message."

Northern

"Look up at me," said the smith. The slender, blond girl, tears in her eyes, looked up at him. He opened the hinged collar of black iron, about a half inch in height. He put it about her throat. It also contained a welded ring, suitable for the attachment of a chain. "Put your head beside the anvil," he said. He took her hair, and threw it forward, and thrust her neck against the left side of the anvil. Over the anvil lay the joining ends of the two pieces of the collar. The inside of the collar was separated by a quarter of an inch from her neck. I saw the fine hairs on the back of her neck. On one part of the collar are two, small, flat, thick rings. On the other is a single such ring. These rings, when the wings of the collar are joined, are aligned, those on one wing on top and bottom, that on the other in the center. They fit closely together, one on top of the other. The holes in each, about three-eighths of an inch in diameter, too, of course, are perfectly aligned. The smith, with his thumbs, forcibly, pushed a metal rivet through the three holes. The rivet fits snuggly. "Do not move your head, Bond-maid," said the smith. Then, with great blows of the iron hammer, he riveted the iron collar about her throat.A man then pulled her by the hair from the anvil and threw her to one side. She lay there weeping, a naked bond-maid, marked and collared.

Plank

The primary holding arrangement for women on the benches, however, are not chains. Each place on the bench is fitted with ankle and wrist stocks, and for each bench there is a plank collar, a plank which opens horizontally, each half of which contains five matching, semicircular openings, which, when it is set on pinions, closed, and chained in place, provides thusly five sturdy, wooden inclosures for the small, lovely throats of women. The plank is thick and thus the girls's chins are held high. The plank is further reinforced between each girl with a narrowly curved iron band, the open ends of which are pierced; this is slid tight in its slots, in its metal retainers, about the boards, and secured in place with a four-inch metal pin, which may or may not be locked in place.
Savages of Gor, page 60

Plate

I could see the heavy metal collar hammered about the man's neck, not uncommon in a male slave. His head would have been placed across the anvil, and the metal curved about his neck with great blows.
Hunters of Gor, page 13

Rope

I had worn only a rope collar, but yet it seemed to me that it, even in its coarseness, made me more beautiful, more exciting. When Thurnus had tied it on my throat he had shown it to me in one of Melina's mirrors.
Slave Girl of Gor, page 216

Turian

The Turian collar lies loosely on the girl, a round ring; it fits so loosely that, when grasped in a man's fist, the girl can turn within it.
Nomads of Gor, page 29

Shipping

"What sort of collar do you wear?" "A shipping collar, Master. It shows that I am a portion of the cargo of the Palms of Schendi."
Explorers of Gor, page 79

Vine

It was hot, and the coils of the marsh vine about my throat were hot. Beneath the coils my neck was red, and slippery with sweat and dirt. I put my finger in the collar to pull it a bit from my throat.

Kolar/Collar Attachments

Errand Capsule

I did have an errand capsule, a capped, narrow leather cylinder, such as may be used for carrying notes, messages, and such, on a string around my neck, the string over my collar.
Dancer of Gor, page 300

Collar Sleeve

I reached out, timidly, towards her throat. I touched the object there. "What is this?" I asked. "The silk?" she asked. "That is a collar stocking, or a collar sleeve. They may be made of many different materials. In a cooler climate they are sometimes of velvet. In most cities they are not used."
Kajira of Gor, page 46

Identification Anklet

. . . My ankles were crossed and tied together with a short piece of rope. A metal anklet of some sort was fastened on my left ankle." "A girls identificatory ankled," I said, "It is removed after her delivery to Gor"

Free Companion, Collaring and Punishment

The canvas covering of the wagon had been drawn back, probably to air the contents from the dampness of the storm. No one seemed to be within the wagon, or about it, other than the pair at the side of it. I had little doubt, accordingly, that the blond woman kneeling before the fellow with the whip was his free companion, or former free companion. The girl who had been beneath the wagon last night, had been formerly purchased, and primarily purchased, I had suspected, in an attempt, I thought, by the fellow to encourage his companion to take her relationship with him more seriously. She had apparently done so, at least to the extent of treating the slave with great cruelty. But now the slave was gone, and there was a chain on her neck. He had apparently now gone to the heart of the matter. If she were still his free companion, it seemed she would now be kept in the modality of bondage, but perhaps she was now only his former free companion, and had been reduced to actual bondage, now being subject to purchase by anyone. I recalled how she had bent in terror to kiss his feet. There was no doubt that she would now take her relationship to him seriously.

It is difficult not to do so when one is owned, and subject to the whip. The woman would now discover that her companion, or former companion, a fellow perhaps hitherto taken somewhat too lightly, one perhaps hitherto accorded insufficient attention and respect, one perhaps hitherto neglected and ignored, even despised and scorned, was indeed a man, and one who now would see to it that she served him well, one who would now own and command her, one who would summon forth the woman in her, and claim from her, and receive from her, the total entitlements of the master.

Free Companionship and Other Ceremonies

Free Companionship and Other Ceremonies

There following are some ceremonies that are used within a city.

"AND" Ceremony
This ceremony is done between two people, Rarius usually. The more experienced or knowledgeable one usually does the asking. (Before asking in public it is best to discuss this privately) Taking a blade and making a Honor cut on your forarm, the one you are bonding with does similar. Grasping one another's forearms allowing the blood to mingle, you state an oath.
This is an example of the oath:
"My blood and yours mingle to be one
My Honor and Your Honor become one
My foes and Your foes become one
From this day forward know that you will always have
...a sword to guard your back
...a Brother to turn to when in need
...no matter what the need or circumstances
Till the City of Dust claims us
This is my vow and oath to you."
Blood Brothers of Gor pg 475

Branding Ceremony
The Master secures the slave in the branding rack (shaped rather like an X-shaped table, with either snap-bracelets (manacles) for her wrists and ankles at the ends of the X, or metal rings set into the wood so her wrists and ankles might be secured with binding fiber. A removable vise-like clamp fitted with spinning twist handles to adjust the tension can be attached to the left leg platform, to hold the slave's left thigh motionless during the actual branding. The Master holds up the heated branding iron, white hot, for the slave to see and says, "You will soon be branded, girl." When the brand is ready, he holds it above her left thigh and says, "You are now to be branded, slave girl." He then brands the slave, pressing it firmly into her skin for five full Ihn (seconds), then swiftly and cleanly removes it. He examines the mark closely, hoping that it was clean and deep enough to create an excellent brand. It is common Gorean practice to allow the slave the luxury of screaming, since it is in effect her final act as a free person. Sometimes assistants are standing by with small vials of oil and salve, which they then dab onto the brand to reduce the chance of infection and promote faster healing. The Master then frees the slave from the rack.
Explorers of Gor pg 71

Colaring Ceremony
Slaves assumes the submission position, (kneeling in front of the Free, arms extended, wrists crossed, head falling between arms leaving the neck bare). Slave then repeats the following after the Free. Here is an example and can be changed by the Free.

I once [insert name] herewith submit myself, completely and totally, in all times to him who is known as [position in city and city name] to be his girl, his slave, an article of his property, his to do with as he pleases.

Then the Free puts on the colar and then the slave can be named if the Free desides to do so.
Tribesmen of Gor pgs 359-360

Disownment Ceremony
A parent, who is of same Caste places His/Her hand on the hilt of his sword or symbol of Their Caste, the other hand is placed on the symbol of the city or homestone of the family and says the words, "This person is disowned and no longer a member of our family or caste." The person named is then without family or caste.
Hunters of Gor pg 148

Free Companion Ceremony
For a Free Woman, realize that you are now under you Free Companion. You have entrusted him to now protect you. He will take care of you. But you also lose some of the freedom you have acquired, as he is your Free Companion. His word does become your law. A Free Companion can be chained to the end of the bed, usually the Free Women is the one chained there. When you have found the one you feel you want to Free Companion with, there is normally an announcement made, in the room, that you are commencing to court. During that time, really get to know your partner. There is no set time limit for courting, as it is between the two of you. When you both decide this is what you want, then go to the bride-to-be's Father, brother or Ubar/Jarl and he will set a bride price that must be fulfilled, when this is done you will announce a date for the ceremony. Below is a example of the contract, which may be changed.

Funeral Ceremony
The common ceremony of a warrior is one where a pyre is built by his friends and caste members of ka-la-na wood, which are trimmed and squared. The pyre takes the form of a structured, tiered, truncated pyramid. Free women then carry jars of perfumed oils and sprinkle it on the pyre. The body of the Warrior is borne on the shoulders of 4 Warriors, on crossed spears, lashed together. The body is wrapped in scarlet leather. The funeral prosession follows, they do not chant, or sing, or carry the boughs of ka-la0na nor play an musical instrument. At such times Goreans do not sing or speak, they are silent, for at such times words mean nothing, and would demean or insult. For Goreans there is only silence, memory and fire. A family member or one who was close to the person lights the pyre.
Dancer of Gor pg 426 & Assassin of Gor pg 2

Swearing of Oaths (Coming of Age)
When coming of age young men and women participate in a ceremony which involves the swearing of oaths, sharing of bread, fir and salt. The Homestone is held of each young person and is kissed. Only then are the laurel wreaths and the mantle of citizenship conferred. They must also pass certain examinations. In most cities the young must be vouched for by the citizens of the city which are not blood related to them and be questioned before a committee of citizens. The intent is to determine worthiness or lack of to take the Homestone of the city as their own.
