Kati Evan's Return to Fina

Today (in 2016) I came across a scroll with Yoda's history written on it. It was fascinating to read about my friend/teacher and all that he had gone through. Which made me think that my story should be written down as well. So here is mine... (it is a work in progress until I am dust).

I, Kati Evans, was born to an Ubar of Rarn, a great and noble man. It was among the walls of his city where I spent my early years growing up among guards who protected me, servants who took care of me, and teachers who schooled me in the ways of the blue caste. Those early years were happy years.

My mother, I have no recollection of her. In later years I was told that she was of the blue caste who had gone to dust when I was very young. That is all Father would say when I ask about her. If you look close it is possible to see the pain in his eyes whe when I do, so long ago I ceased.

(Ask me about my blue friend who was part of my early years.)

There was a great upheaval in the land and war came to the city when I had yet to reach my full height. So Fater sent me off to continue my training in the best school in the land far from my home. School life was all about scrolls and learning, there was little time for anything else allowed. The days were very disciplined and structured, rather unpleasant years which have faded with time.

When school ended I was sent to the scribes in Fina where my brother, Kama Seminario, lived and he became my guardian. My brother companioned and they had a lovely little girl. Shortly after that his companion and baby girl were killed in a raid. My brother was grief-stricken and left Fina. Sometime later a man came to Fina with some of his belongings looking for me. He told me he was asked to bring them to me by Kama. The man told me that he left on the journey to find me knowing that he would never see his friend again. So my brother had gone to dust as well.

While there in Fina, I worked for the Chief Scribe until the High Magistrate at the time noticed me stepping into the middle of two arguing warriors with swords drawn ready to strike and talking them both into sheathing their swords and talking to me about their problem. So the High Magistrate decided to promote me to the position of magistrate. Being a magistrate was a great fit as I seem to have been overly blessed by the Priest Kings with a high curiosity and this uncanny ability to walk into the middle of people fighting, often with one or more swords drawn, and still managing to talk them down to a more reasonable was of solving their disagreement.

For a short season, I was the High Magistrate Kael's companion. All too quickly ended when he was lost in a raid and I found myself serving as High Magistrate in his place. It was a very busy time, sitting in judgment on a number of cases in Fina, working 50+ hours a week (while holding a full-time job in my first life). It was a very busy time and left little time to socialize with others of the town.

The one day Father, the Ubar of Rarn, came to Fina to check up on me. Father had gotten word of my brothers passing so he came to see for himself. When he arrived at Fina the Ubar at the time would not even acknowledge his presence; which made my father so upset that he left the city within the hour with me in tow.

Once arriving at Rarn, Father placed me in the position of High Magistrate there. So I picked up doing the duties I had performed for Fina but on a bit slower pace of 25+ hours per week. Once during my time there, a dear man did ask to court me; however, the city was attacked and fell in the month-long battle. Few of us were lucky enough to escape with our lives. Rarn, however, was not so lucky becoming nothing more than rubble.

I found myself without a Home Stone or a family. Did they survive? I did not know. I wondered for a time from city to city, providing service where I could and traveling with caravans to new cities when I could find safe passage.

Eventually, this brought me to Abydos and I was once again recognized for my work as a magistrate and I became their Chief Magistrate. Here I found a place of rest and happiness I had not known in some years. I lived in a free women's house with others and was rarely alone or lonesome.

It was here to my great joy where "Father" found me and then later adopted me into his family. That is when I became Kati Beattie.

One companion of my Father said of me, "Of the Blue Caste... a talented Magistrate. Don't let her quiet and shy demeanor fool ya. She's well spoken, well versed and loved by her father and me." She was right, being a magistrate runs in my blood, I know it now. To stop breathing would be easier than to stop being a magistrate for me.

This man I call Father, was the retired scarlet commander, former Ubar, and a captain. He acquired two great merchant houses and was a merchant of great wealth. With his companion at his side, they ran this now combined merchant house together with family and others. This caused Father to move us to various cities and depending on the cities needs I often worked in the position of a magistrate or high magistrate for each city. One such place you could find the family was within the city walls of Turia running the merchant house, hereI became a magistrate once again.

Until once again, my Father went the way of dust and I found myself alone and traveling once more. I went from town to town never finding roots and always being drawn north toward the Home Stone I so loved and pledged myself to so many years ago. Along the way, I went back to my original name since those of the North would not know of the Beattie family, but might remember the Evans name.

So after wearing out a couple of pairs of shoes and odd jobs along the way I finally crossed into the gates of Fina. Now I find that I am home once again. Only the passing of the hands will tell where life will take me now.  ... and to my surprise, I find that I am Head of Caste Magistrate of Fina and the work begins again.

Please talk it all with a grain of salt.

To read more you can find some of my scrolls at https://magistratekati.blogspot.com where I claim nothing more than these are scrolls I have gathered from many places over the years. As Head of Caste I am also keeping a record of what crosses my desk at https://recordofeventsbymagistrate.blogspot.com. When the years have gone and I go to dust, may these scrolls bring a piece of wisdom to someone. If you want to check them for accuracy so to the books which John Norman wrote telling of the life on Gor for yourself and decide for yourself if my scrolls are accurate and true to the intent of the author.

May your path always find you with salt, fire, and bread.
